How Citation Generator works
How does the citation generator build a reference?
You pick a style â APA 7, MLA 9, or Chicago â and a source type, either website or book, then the tool assembles the author, title, date, and publisher fields into that style's standard order and punctuation. For APA and MLA it automatically flips your author input from "First Last" into "Last, First"; Chicago keeps the name as you typed it. The citation updates live as you fill in each field.
When is this useful versus a full reference manager?
It's meant for quick, one-off citations, like grabbing a properly formatted reference for a single article you're quoting in an essay, without setting up an account or a library in a tool like Zotero or EndNote. It's a good fit when you just need one clean citation to paste into a bibliography and move on.
What source types and edge cases does it not handle?
Only two source types are supported â website and book â so there's no dedicated format for journal articles, films, or social media posts, and no fields for a DOI or multiple authors. The tool itself flags this with an on-page note recommending you double-check anything unusual against your official style guide, since it's built for straightforward, single-author sources rather than every citation edge case.
