How Speed Test works
How does this tool work?
Ping is measured by fetching a tiny file six times, dropping the first result as connection warm-up, and taking the minimum of the remaining five, with jitter computed from how much each sample deviates from the average. Download speed times a 5MB file fetch, and upload speed generates 4MB of random bytes with crypto.getRandomValues() and POSTs them to a script that simply reads and discards the data to time the transfer.
When would I use this?
It is a quick sanity check on your connection to this particular server - for example right after switching routers or ISPs - rather than a substitute for a full multi-location test of your plan's advertised speed.
Why do my results differ from Speedtest.net?
This isn't a multi-location test like Ookla/Speedtest.net - every measurement is against this one host, so the numbers reflect this server's own bandwidth and your specific route to it. A slow result could mean congestion on our end or along the path between you and us, not necessarily a problem with your line.
