How Income Tax Calculator works
How does the income tax calculator work?
It applies marginal tax slabs the way most progressive income tax systems do: income is split into brackets, and only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, then the amounts are summed. The default slabs loaded (0% up to 300,000, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30% for income above 1,500,000) mirror a typical Indian income tax slab structure, and the effective rate shown is simply total tax divided by total income.
When would I use this?
Use it to estimate tax liability on a given income under a slab system, or to see how your effective tax rate changes as income grows through progressive brackets. Because you can add, remove, and edit every slab and rate, it also works for modeling a completely different bracket structure than the default one.
What is the important caveat?
The tool itself warns that the pre-loaded slabs are an illustrative example and are not guaranteed to match current official rates in any country - you need to edit them to match your actual tax year and jurisdiction. Treat the output as a rough estimate, not tax advice, and verify figures against an official source before filing.
