How Chess Opening Explorer works
How does the chess opening explorer work?
It searches a fixed list of 28 named openings built directly into the page, each with an ECO classification code (or range) and a representative move sequence in algebraic notation. Typing a name filters by matching text in the opening's title, while typing moves like 1.e4 c5 matches against the stored move sequence with spacing stripped out, so both search styles work from the same box.
When would I use this?
It's handy for either direction: look up "Sicilian" to see its standard starting moves and ECO range, or type out moves you just played to find out what the opening is called.
How deep does the opening coverage go?
This covers 28 major main-line openings and their most common tabiya, not full opening theory — each entry shows one representative line rather than a branching tree of variations, sidelines, or named sub-variations. ECO codes are shown as ranges (like B20-B99 for the Sicilian, which alone covers dozens of named variations) rather than resolving to the exact code for the specific line played.
